An exciting full day workshop with artist and printmaker Lesley Shaw, discovering or developing the *intaglio process of drypoint etching. You’ll be working from an artist’s studio and using an etching press.

If new to the technique, Lesley will lead you through the process. You will learn how to use drypoint etching tools safely and effectively exploring mark making with the use of steel etching needles or scribers, sandpaper and wire wool on a practice plate. Then using either your own drawing or an image provided, you will draw this image onto a transparent acrylic plate using a selected etching tool. Lesley will demonstrate and guide you through the process of inking up your plate, wiping and printing your plate with oil-based printing inks, using the etching press. You will leave with a small limited edition of single colour drypoint etchings on A4 paper.

For those who are now familiar with this process, this is a wonderful opportunity to experiment and explore this exciting technique further. You will have an extra two hours to consider the depth and direction of the etched line, and to wipe your etching plate in different ways, making decisions on the direction and amount of ink you leave on your plate. There will also be a chance to work in an alternative colour ink, and to produce a small limited edition print run of your image.

Suitable for all levels and abilities. Perfect for beginners looking to learn a new skill, and for returners. This is an excellent follow-on for those who’ve attended Lesley’s drypoint workshops before, and keen to expand their drypoint practice. Just bring yourself and wear suitable clothing. Aprons and gloves will be provided.

All materials and refreshments are included. This is a full day workshop with 2.5 hours tuition, either side of a one hour lunch break where you can explore York’s city centre.
